SAO PAULO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Brazil's Globo television late on Thursday
reported that state oil giant Petrobras , which last month caused the country's
worst oil spill in 25 years, had another, although minor, offshore oil spill.

Globo showed a helicopter view of an oil stain in the ocean, which it said
occupied an area of 1.3 square miles (2 square km), off the coast of
northeastern Ceara state.

It said Petrobras officials had confirmed an oil spill of about 100 litres (25
gallons) of crude and that the company was trying to remove the stain with
chemicals.

Petrobras officials were not available for comment.

The government on Tuesday imposed a record fine of nearly $100 million for
July's spill of 1 million gallons (4 million liters) of crude in the Iguacu River and a
repeated damage to the ecosystem. The oil firm had caused four spills since
January.

Earlier this week, Petrobras reported a new spill of some 270 gallons (1,000
liters) of a toxic fuel additive, known to cause cancer in animals, near Rio de
Janeiro.

The spills have tarnished Petrobras' image, raising questions in the government
about how effective the company is in policing its vast network.
