I think "for years bitter enemies" overstates the case. And competitors collaborate on this kind of thing all the time.

Microsoft Board OKs Share Buyback Program

REDMOND, Wash. (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) said Monday its board of directors has approved a stock repurchase program, effective today, for an undetermined number of shares.

The software giant said the amount of repurchases for fiscal 2001 will be based on several factors including the level of employee stock option exercises, and may vary from amounts purchased in previous years.

Shares of Microsoft were last up 13/16 at 69-15/16. The company has about 5.5 billion diluted shares outstanding, according to its July earnings report.
