The size of the ultra-high density storage flash market is so difficult to estimate. To give you an idea of its scope recall that Kodak, Fuji and Agfa, the three leading manufacturers of emulsion film, are all producing digital cameras. That is called DISRUPTION, my friend. The Kodak article indicates that they are concerned about e-sharing and the pervasiveness of home printing. With companies like HP, Lexmark, Epson, Canon... working on high definition inkjet printers the market for Kodak film is set to plummet in a few years. Also, there are now so many on-line photo print services that it boggles the mind. I am also with you when it comes to laptops. If you look at how companies are miniaturizing their devices now it is by eliminating unnecessary ports and drives like the CD-ROM and floppy. My NEC MobilePro has just flash for storage and DRAM for computation, no moving parts whatsoever. It is also very parsimonious with its energy consumption and it is "instant-on". Not even the "hibernation mode" of most laptops can compete with this. Also, if the Cassiopeia E-100, E-105 and E-115 are any indication of the word processing & multimedia experience one can attain I would say that laptops are going to undergo period of evolution over the next few years. Extinction of older generations and the emergence of a new breed are certain to occur. I would be happy to see newer generations of laptops with an LCD touch screen, a flash-based hard drive, dual or triple CF ports for storage and peripherals, a Transmeta CPU, a lithium polymer battery and... ...a "SanDisk Inside" sticker on the box.
