SONET and DWDM are 2 different segments ....SONET is the standard in the metro core at this time with DWDM expected to overtake the market by 2003 ... ONIS and SCMR have the edge because of their "open architecture" software that allows their equipment to respond to SONET at this time and DWDM when the time comes ... ONI's product, the ONLINE9000 can deliver traditional SONET as well as non-SONET services like Gigabit Ethernet, ESCON, and Fiber Channel. OLMP (ONI's management protocol suite), enables efficient internetworking with client equipment (routers, switches, SONET): SCMR bundles their equipment in a similar fashion ... this gives ONI and SCMR the extreme edge now since the existing SONET can still be used with their equipment and upgraded at any time ...
