EMC Honored as Only 'IT' Supplier to Receive General Motors Supplier of the Year Award
Prestigious Award Highlights EMC's Role in Helping GM Shape New Economy
HOPKINTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 7, 2000--EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage, today announced that General Motors Corporation has honored EMC with the 1999 Supplier of the Year award. EMC was selected as the only information technology (IT) supplier to receive this year's award. Celebrating its eighth consecutive year, the prestigious Supplier of the Year award is given annually to the top one percent of GM's more than 30,000 global suppliers in recognition of their superior performance during the previous calendar year.

EMC President and Chief Operating Officer, Joseph M. Tucci, said, ``We are deeply appreciative of this prestigious award. As one of the most powerful forces in the automotive industry, GM has also carved a name for itself as a world leader in the use of information technology. This fact is at the core of GM's transformation into a leader of the new economy.''

``EMC is one of our best and brightest suppliers,'' said Harold R. Kutner, Group Vice President, Worldwide Purchasing and North American Production Control & Logistics. ``It is an honor to have EMC working with us. Their contributions to General Motors' overall success are immeasurable. We look upon the Supplier of the Year award as an important recognition of EMC's value as an automotive industry supplier.''

The GM Supplier of the Year award began as a global program in 1992. Award-winners are selected by a global team of executives from purchasing, engineering, manufacturing and logistics who base their decisions on suppler performance in quality, service, technology and price.

General Motors has standardized on EMC E-Infostructure across its worldwide operations to support its engineering operations, as well as other business-critical applications, such as e-business, SAP, PeopleSoft, and Oracle.

``GM's use of EMC storage across its global infrastructure is a prime example of EMC's leadership in transforming storage from a passive container to the essential foundation for managing, sharing and protecting an organization's information,'' Tucci added. ``As such, EMC E-Infostructure is now being viewed as the place where information lives -- at the center of the IT infrastructure -- with servers acting as peripherals.''

GM's EMC installation comprises Symmetrix Enterprise Storage systems equipped with EMC Connectrix fibre switches to store data from its open systems servers - including Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Compaq Windows NT, Silicon Graphics - and mainframe environment. GM also has deployed EMC's Celerra network-attached file servers and EMC's advanced software solutions and services - including EMC ControlCenter, EMC TimeFinder, Symmetrix Remote Disaster Recovery (SRDF), EDM, and EMC PowerPath - to continually improve the availability and manageability of its global information resources.

EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC - news) is the world leader in information storage systems, software, networks and services, providing the information infrastructure for a connected world. Information about EMC's products and services can be found at www.emc.com.
