Kash; you sound like one of those "jittery" fragile investors of AMD that the one news article talked about this morning

Saying a company has "lied" is a pretty strong accusation... one that normally needs strong substantial proof behind it.
Not sure I see that here

PS.. my Duron upgrade is with an A7V Asus Kt-133 chipset.. the shop I bought it from had no supply problems on it.

kash-- Re: AMD's lying ways

AMD has been fairly consistent in that at each conference call for the last four quarters guidance has been that infrastructure issues are the primary ramping concern. They have not, however, said anything bad about Via. In fact, they have gone out of their way to praise Via and maintain a friendly tone, even though Via's support has been, arguably, half-ass.

I think the q2 cc discussion about mobos was more focused on being nice to Via than actually discussing the general situation with regards to ramping Socket A. I think this was done for the long-term maintenance of a happier relationship with Via and the other motherboard manufacturers, which is rather necessary given AMD's virtual gorilla strategy. In other words, it would have strained relations to have criticized the Taiwanese motherboard makers, and would probably have had the overall effect of decreasing availability. In short, a company can't say at the conference call, "Via is being a crappy partner" and then try to be their lover in direct communication and stake a virtual gorilla strategy on the support of these other companies.

If AMD doesn't sell 3.6M Athlon derivatives this quarter, then I think we can have a discussion about the veracity of AMD's conference call statements.

Kash,

< We have seen several reports today that due to chipset MB issues the Duron has been delayed in the market by several months.

HOWEVER AMDS management has LIED to investors repeatedly by saying that infrastructure was NOT a problem.
>

I'm afraid you are accusing of this company lying (second time within the past few days) based on your interpretation of AMD's comments.

I view AMD's comment of no problems with Infrastructure as AMD having confidence in selling the projected 3.5 Million units of K7 core based CPUs.

AMD never gave any indication of what the mix going to be (Durons vs calssic Athlons & Thunderbirds). No Durons SKU's by the Major oem's does indicate a problem with Duron's Infrastructure (which will not be a problem in Q4). AMD's statement about no problems with the infrastructure could be based on its ability to sell 3.6 K7s with the mix adjusted to conditions of various segments of the infrastructure, oem and supplier's needs, and market conditions.

Kash I think OEM's are trying to flush out Celeries and K6-x systems for back to school, as they are afraid to be stuck with a bunch of JUNK.

Just look at last weekends ads as evidence.

kash, re:<AMD lied about chipset issues>
First of all, there are plenty of KT7 boards available and plenty of Durons available so I believe the decision by the major OEM's not to sell Duron systems for the B2S market was made based on economic reasons rather than supply issues.

In short, the motherboards are expensive and Intel is selling Celerons to the OEM's very aggressively. Intel is also helped in this regard by the fact that there is a glut of i810 boards being sold cheaply so they will be cleared out before the i815's become more widely available.

When AMD brought out Super Socket 7, it took time to build up sales. Was Intel able to switch all the OEM's to socketed chips in one quarter? The answer is NO, it took a year.

As Goutama said, if AMD is unable to sell 3.6M K7 processors of all types this quarter, I think we can resurrect the "lying" argument. But it would not be lying about chipsets, it would be underestimating the difficulties of the Slot to Socket transition.

Kash,

<HOWEVER AMDS management has LIED to investors repeatedly by saying that infrastructure was NOT a problem.>

And the management would have gotten lot more respect and very likely a better response to earnings if they fessed up and said this was the issue that limited growth and the issue is being fixed going forward. And to make matters worse, almost everyone saw through it anyway.
Extremely poor judgement.

Kash, now that you are convinced that AMD's managers are liars, will you be selling any position you have in the company and ceasing to invest in them?

After all, how will you be able to intelligently invest in a company that is clouding your analysis with misinformation?

I'm just curious about your plans.

Regards,
Dave
