Aus,

I am basking in the glow of your gratitude <g>... The Hitachi info really just quantified what you already had been stressing, regarding the differing strengths of segments of the Flash market.

Re Royalties:

1) Core flash patents (totally unrelated to CF or MMC assembly) appear to make up the bulk of SanDisk's current royalty revenue stream. As Eli stated, no new licensees contributed to the phenomenal Q2 royalty revenues. I suspect Sharp, Samsung, Toshiba and Hitachi account for the majority of these dollars. Toshiba's contribution may decline with time depending on how the FlashVision JV is constructed. In any case I am anticipating at least $70 million in royalties in 2000 which us up steeply compared to 1999.

I didn't realize that Sandisk's IP position was so strong in basic Flash technology. I'd like to understand these things better and I appreciate the work you're doing to clarify the issues.

As far as me contacting Sandisk for clarification on the MMC IP issues, I'd be glad to try, although I think you would be better able since your understanding of the area is much better than mine.

I just found out the other day that the PocketPC uses 16MB of ROM memory for the Windows CE O/S (which makes it instant-on) + standard applications. This ROM is about half as fast as DRAM and it is completely random-accessible, so I guess it's not Flash-ROM, which is not nearly that fast and not truly random-accessible. I need to learn more about that type of memory (ROM). Mass storage is provided through a CF slot.
