Re: Haim: if you do not have the expertise then why comment at all?

Mephisto: Sun could sell their low-end workstations if they put them in a box, like other PC manufactures, and sold those workstations at Comp USA and other computer shops.

If Sun did that, the company may very well be the next Dell.

Mephisto,

I take it you don't know anything about DELL either?

Dell sells direct, you're thinking of a Gateway type of model.

This is a non-issue though. The real problem is why are all of the competitors' servers getting faster while Sun's are not? Where is the Ultra Sparc III? Is there a problem? How come IBM's 24-way S80 server running on a chip that was qualified over 18 months ago beat the 64-way E10000 on every benchmark?

I'm going to take a wild guess and bet that you've never used a Solaris workstation. Anyone who wants UNIX at home can buy a Linux machine for much less than Sun would charge for the cardboard box their workstations come in. But just to be balanced I'm going to PO Haim by giving Sun an order for $2.5M next quarter. If it was a pure hardware decision IBM would have won hands down. It's never just a hardware decision. BTW the cardboard boxes are very nice, I believe that Luc from the Clown thread lives in one.

Mephisto, as a former network engineer I will give you my opinion on this - most people who buy their PC's at Comp USA or any other walk in store are: 1)either too dumb to use Unix productively, 2)have no use for it, 3)have very little idea of what Unix is, or 4)a combination of the above. So ask yourself WHY these boxes would be bought all of a sudden...maybe if they were painted funky colors like the iMac? -ggg-

People that know Unix and want a workstation know how to get one, and they don't shop in computer stores. Many extremely suitable used Unix/Sun boxes can be had on Ebay cheaply, that is where most of my former coworkers got theirs for their home networks, experiments, firewalls, etc. Very few people need a new top of the line Sparc for personal use. I don't see this as a very productive potential revenue source for Sun.

good luck, the above is only my opinion
