Also this press release: amd.com "By extending the x86 instruction set to 64-bits, AMD's x86-64 technology should give us very fast compiler retargetting and the easiest kernel port so far," said Alan Cox, Linux Kernel Developer. Jim-- Will software companies have the time or will to write it vs Itaniums IA-64? It depends on the following. How good is AMD's implementation of 64-bit instructions? How easy is it to implement operating systems and compilers for AMD's 64-bit instructions? Does the order of magnitude increase in compilers (I've had this discussion with 3 PhDs each of whom specialized in compilers, so I'm not b.s.ing this one) required by IA-64 occur? How good an implementation of IA-64 does McKinley offer? Does McKinley arrive on schedule in q4, 2001? Will software companies have the time or will to write it vs Itaniums IA-64? If it's a good implementation, all AMD really needs is Microsoft, plus maybe Adobe and two or three other companies for the sake of good benchmarks. -Eric
