Jim,

re:Software for Sledgehammer

I just started looking around this evening,
looks like Linux-SUSE is working on X86-64.
(Check the email address)

sources.redhat.com

Several posts, someone ain't doing this for fun.

Also this press release:
amd.com

"By extending the x86 instruction set to 64-bits, AMD's x86-64 technology should give us very fast compiler retargetting and the easiest kernel port so far," said Alan Cox, Linux Kernel Developer.

My WAG is a Linux announcement.

Jim-- Will software companies have the time or will to write it vs Itaniums IA-64?

It depends on the following. How good is AMD's implementation of 64-bit instructions? How easy is it to implement operating systems and compilers for AMD's 64-bit instructions? Does the order of magnitude increase in compilers (I've had this discussion with 3 PhDs each of whom specialized in compilers, so I'm not b.s.ing this one) required by IA-64 occur? How good an implementation of IA-64 does McKinley offer? Does McKinley arrive on schedule in q4, 2001?

Will software companies have the time or will to write it vs Itaniums IA-64?

If it's a good implementation, all AMD really needs is Microsoft, plus maybe Adobe and two or three other companies for the sake of good benchmarks.

Jeez, Jim, are you running in Paul emulation mode, or did the Athwipe guy get ahold of your account?

Cheers, Dan.

Jim,

Can someone tell me where the 64 bit software that will take advantage of Sludgepumpers 64 bit architecture will come from?

The one that matters the most is Microsoft. If they port Windows 2000 (all versions), plus their development tools, AMD will be fine.

I absence of Itanium, this would be a huge task. But after Itanium version is finished, additional SledgeHammer version will be much easier to do.
