Fitzgerald, and others of the same persuasion, seem to be having an impact today. Below is an audio link to Fitzgerald's comments yesterday. ( I apologize if it has already been posted.)

To paraphrase:

1. Slower growth rate in 2001.

2. Do not buy now, there will be a better opportunity in the next 6 to 9 months.

Re: Analysts. Here is the view of Eric Reguly, a business columnist at the Globe and Mail:

Analysts continue to suffer from herd mentality

Investors who were already skeptical about an analyst's true value are probably doubly skeptical today. Indeed, the sight of dozens of analysts flinging themselves off the listing tech ship does not particularly inspire confidence...

...The problem with many analysts is that they're too much like the majority of investors. The go with the flow instead of breaking with the pack.

They are testing our faith here to see if strong hands actually hold these shares. I really believed we would be strongly up today after studying the earnings and the call. Still think that can happen but CSCO fall hurts those prospects now. We will be proved right and as I said yesterday, I will buy more at 59 if given the chance. I know what I read and unless there is blatant lying going on which I doubt, we will be fine.

I think the chip industry, the AnalCyst community and several institutions are successfully fighting the last war; and are unable to recognize that some of the current battle conditions are totally changed.

The resulting underinvestment by the chipmakers will prolong this expansion cycle.

The underinvestment by the institutions has created a massive profit opportunity for individual investors.

JMHO,
Ian.
