But are we paying enough attention? One thing that makes me fear for the long term health of the markets is the current competition between politicians to see who can promise the biggest tax cut. Tax cuts stimulate growth in the economy. If the economy slows enough to need stimulating by the time these tax cuts come on line, then the timing will be perfect and we will know that we are leading charmed lives. If not, then the unneeded stimulus would only serve to drive the Fed into further tightening of the money supply and raising of interest rates. AMAT is a great company, and the gorilla of its industry, but it is not immune to economic cycles.
