I don't know if I'm the only one that sees pathetic OS thrashing announcements like this as major validations of Sun's strategy. It should be read to the press by someone wearing a red rubber nose. Maybe I'm nuts, but to me all the article below really says is: "We here at HWP don't have a clue what to do except to start drafting Carly's walking papers."

If street analysts really understood the implications of this, they would create a new "treasury-grade strong buy platinum plus gold" rating for SUNW stock. Unfortunately, since they are mostly post-pubescent Maxim readers, they probably won't.

But boy, is it a good sign. Buy SUNW.

HEWLETT-PACKARD TO EXPAND COMMITMENT TO LINUX

PALO ALTO, Calif., Aug 11 (Reuters) - Computing giant Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE:HWP) on Monday will designate Linux as one of its three "strategic operating systems" and add new products and services to support it.

The company said the move reflects growing demand for the Linux system and should help its customers use Linux with more confidence and in a broader range of applications.

"This was really driven by consumer need," said Jim Bell, general manager of open source and Linux operations at
Hewlett-Packard. "Linux is a tsunami that is over-running the marketplace. It has spread like wildfire and we anticipate this is going to accelerate.

Linux joins Hewlett-Packard's own Unix operating system as well as Microsoft Corp's (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 2000 as the company's third strategic operating system.

The company said its increased support for Linux should make it a more appropriate solution for bigger enterprises.
