Siemens The Sleeper In China Handset Race
Saturday, August 5, 2000 10:40:15 AM - Phillips Business Information

Aug. 05, 2000 (Internet Protocol IQ, Vol. 4, No. 147 via COMTEX) -- Siemens' mobile handset
market share in China doesn't rival the likes of Motorola [MOT], Nokia [NOK] or Ericsson
[ERICY], but the German telecom technology vendor still is making significant inroads in that
burgeoning market.

According to results of a survey conducted by the Information Technology Market Research
Institute, which is operated by Huicong International Information, Motorola leads China's wireless
handset market with 31.9 percent. Nokia is second at 29.4 percent and Ericsson is third at 21.4
percent.

Siemens has 7.3 percent of the market. Analysts at the institute, however, expect that number to
grow.

Siemens bumped up sales to China this year by introducing three new handset models in March,
including two with wireless application protocol capability.

The company also created its Information and Communications Mobile Group to combined all of
its wireless technology operations - infrastructure construction, network applications and mobile
terminals.

On the heels of that restructuring in April, Siemens announced it plans to invest $1.5 billion to build
a new mobile Internet system in Asia. Siemens also is working with nine Chinese Internet firms to
improve WAP technology.

Motorola hasn't taken Siemens' incursions sitting down. The U.S. telecom giant introduced five new
handset models during the first half of the year. All Motorola products marketed in China have
WAP capability.

Nokia this year introduced one model in China, the high-end N8850. The survey results, however,
showed Nokia earns most of its profits in China from two older handsets models, the N5110 and
N8210.

Ericsson is recovering lost market share in China with three new WAP- enabled models - the
T28SC, R320S and R380S.
