telecomguy,

It is my proposition that bandwidth will not be free - and that is why QoS is fundmental. I think you completely misunderstand my position and the difference between service provisioning and bandwidth provisioning.. they are two different things. Most companies don't get this.. or they probably do but it looks like boiling the ocean so they ignore it in hopes that it will go away. Actually NT does some service provisioning in telephony but they are a long way away in data. An example might be when you get call waiting added to your phone. In the data world it might be getting an additional integrated phone line with your data line... at which time QoS will become an issue.... and moreso if you're getting your video (TV) signal down the same "pipe". Yes, if everyone has 10M going to their house QoS may not be an issue but I don't believe the carriers will be able to deliver this anytime soon.

That all said - 20 years from now (maybe more) bandwidth will likely be so prevalent that we'll all have fiber to the home and we'll pay our carriers for the services we use - not the bandwidth. The carriers will amoritize the cost of the bandwidth with service revenues... and this may be where you and I are falling off the line of thinking. TOday however bandwidth isn't free and therefore QoS is.

BTW: You're assertion that Cisco isn't getting any service provider revenue or business doesn't hold up. You should research that a bit more. Also, you may want to watch your precious Sonet/SDH ball.. That dog will not hunt for long.
