Are you referring to the ground that protects your electrical service to your house? I'm not sure that is safe. Was it recommended by someone? It's my understanding that all ground systems should remain intact. This includes properly grounding TV antennas, satellite dishes, and any metallic structure located up high on your house. The reasoning is that the lightning will take the path of least resistance to earth ground. If there is a properly sized conductor grounding the outside equipment, the surge will travel through the wire to earth. Otherwise, a poorly grounded antenna would receive the lightning strike and then allow the electricity to rip through the structure of the house. Wet wood being a very poor conductor would catch on fire, or explode. Unplugging all expensive equipment inside the house is a wise idea. Some of the more expensive surge/spike arrestors will often guarantee the cost of your computer/TV/Stereo. Many of them also isolate the telephone and coaxial connections. This is very important. The coaxial (cable T.V./dish/antenna) and phone jacks will fry your equipment just as easily as through your electrical outlet. I notice in my area several homes up in the hills get lightning rods attached to various sections of the house. ...others don't care and hope the insurance covers it... My wife keeps suggesting that I stand on the roof and fly a kite. She said she read in one of those woman's magazines (the ones that always have those tips about men, diets, and those relationship quizzes) that they suggest that husbands go out into the storm with their slippers, bathrobe, and an umbrella, and try to ward off the lightening... It sounds like it could work. I noticed that she has upped my insurance quite a bit lately... I guess she thinks I'm doing better in the stockmarket now, or something... She also bought me a nice radio for the bathtub. It comes with a long cord that I can plug into the wall. She also made a nice stand (in the shower) for it that she sculpted out of several bars of soap... What a thoughtful idea. She's so creative. -Lil'AmpereTheHappyJackass Hee Haw!
