ANTC news release on re-certification seems to acknowledge the cable modem use for VoIP. Then, cable company would need ASP equipment and software system for free local or long distance calls. First with subscribers of cable system or with long distance carrier subscribers. Revenue from fringe benefits of ASP capabilities could be interesting such as answering services, call screening, conference calls, video conferencing calls, automatic taped answers, broadcasting of personalized voice mails, automatic telemarketing scripter, etc. Also advertizing revenues from banners would be available. It is easy but needs patent protection. Present internet browser software covers most of the hard work of communications. Java must be avoided, too slow on browsers. Visual basic and batch processing may be shorter and faster to run background software needed for ASP connection and record storage?
