<There seems to be little evidence that things are proceeding to perfection, and no mechanism.>

I believe the mechanism is the seeking, or moving toward efficiency. The results are seen in everything. I do don't have the time tonight to go far with examples but think about this as some micro examples.

Rocks become smaller and smoother. Mountains are worn down.
The earth moves closer to the sun. The expansion of the universe is slowing.

I do not believe humans play any important role in the perfecting of all things. We will move closer to perfection (dealing with our own circumstances) but we will be long gone before the universe reaches perfection. We are no more important in the big picture than grains of sand are to us.

I wish I had time to say more, now you are just going to think I'm nuts :)
