But money follows the hot sectors and that money is in optics startups who are getting a piece of Nortel's market.

mindmeld, what I read leads me to believe that Nortel is gaining, not losing, market share in optics.

Mindmeld, what can I say? I am ABSOLUTELY not worried about CSCO in the Optics and Wireless space. NT is so far ahead of CSCO that CSCO is buying up also-ran players like Pirelli just to have some hope of finding a niche space within the massive optics upgrade that is currently and will CONTINUE to take place as bandwidth becomes KING.

CSCO is not my concern. LU and ALA is the real competitor to NT but again NT is so far advanced, I don't see anyone catching them and in addition with smart acquisitions like Qtera, Xros, Core-Tek, NT is opening up gaping technological advantage over LU and ALA that is not going to be easily overcome. If NT truely delivers all optical platform to avoid light-electrical pulse-light conversion problem at the gateways..........NT will own the networking space for the forseeable future.

NT doesn't have to stifle CSCO because CSCO is simply not in the game. NT's real worry is LU, ALA and some Japanese companies I can't remember right now.

It's only CSCO's fear and the realization that the data networking rules are changing (against their favor) that they are desperately trying to talk up their optics stratgey to keep their shares afloat just long enough for them to BUY up whatever optics technology that is out there with their funny CSCO money (billions of shares) while the share price is still high.

The ONLY problem with CSCO's strategy is that the key optical startups KNOW that selling out their company to CSCO for CSCO paper is NOT smart as selling out their company to NT. Why? Better fit, higher confidence level in NT leveradging their nascent R&D technology to bring it to the market.

In other words, NT is using their leadership position to grab the best technology out there today to extend their leadership......all this is plain to see.

Ah well, at least one day if your CSCO shares plummet, NT's gains will hopefully more than offset your losses.
