ZO,

It occurs to me, too, that they may be ramping very seriously for the next major wave of xDSL deployments, in the way of passive optical networks (PONs) and their dependent VDSL wares. It seems plausible to me, at least, as "fiber creep" takes the point of distribution to the next major step closer to the home, within VDSL range.

They scooped the first major phase with their RFP win, and they're now preparing for the second phase, while their sub-contractors and licensees continue to supply the service providers from their first win. MHO.

In turn, ALA's subcontractors and licensees are free to join the consortium.

Hi ZO,

Thanks, my provincialism was showing through. ;) You see, I focus not on what the equipment maker (ALA) is focusing on, but what the customer (predominantly the ILECs here in the US) is up to. And what the ILEC in my area (QWST) is up to is killing off US West's residential VDSL experiment in Phoenix.

So we're both right. <w>

Thanks for increasing my overview of the situation. Which lead to the question, in Europe, is it the PTT's who are taking up the ALA VDSL product or is it the upstarts? And is it being applied strictly to the business market or is it spreading downstream to the residential market. I'd love to hear about how you see this VDSL initiative playing out on the other side of the pond.

Best, Ray

"Agree, however 2):VDSL, is being targeted by ALA very seriously...., specially in Europe."

ZO- If you have any urls on VDSL deployments/trials in Europe, I'd appreciate you posting them. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
