Thanks for the comments, Slacker. Like you mentioned KDDI still thinks that the game is "'tis the throughput, stupid"... However, hope that KDDI doesn't ignore the applications - i-mode/AOL/Playstation etc. over mobile data channels are "killer apps." - only techie nerds like myself would choose 64 or 153.6 or higher modems - most folks want Hello Kitty on their phones :-)

Re: <<the best thing that could happen for CDMA is progress in display technology>>

Agree this is a bit of a pinch point. An article on Kodak in the most recent Forbes highlights an OLED (organic light emitting diode) thin screen that Kodak has patents for and that will be used in an upcoming Motorola Startac phone. Kodak apparently has big plans for this. According to the brief material in the article they have so far been able to produce a screen size of about 5.5 inches that has very low power requirements.(It didn't say what size screen would be on the new Startac).

Anyone here familiar with OLED technology (I'm not) and what potential it may have for solving the "display problem"?

KDDI is a fragmented network with no "national" coverage yet. As the merger occurs(6 to 8 separate networks), they will finally be on equal footing with DoCoMo with a national offering and a compatible network. Patience...

Agreed. You may get what you wish for sooner rather than later. For example PDQ 2 will use the standard markup language HTML versus HDML (WAP). Screen size limits HTML type browsing a large B&W bit map screen (Palm V type) is sufficient for HTML browsing. No WAP compatibility needed or tiny limited boring text displays. Its a matter of memory and screen size for manufacturers. Any improvements in flash memory and display technology should help with applications and drive down cost

What about the handspring deal last week?

As next generation handsets are unvieled we should see more HTML compatible handsets with large bitmap/ Color displays.
