Lucent Technologies and NeoPoint Complete Wireless High-Speed 153 Kbps Data Call Compliant With 3rd Generation Cdma Standard
MURRAY HILL, N.J., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - news) and NeoPoint Inc., a market leader in developing award-winning smartphones and smart information services, today announced that their collaboration on next-generation (3G) wireless technology has yielded the first successful data call with a commercial handset using Lucent's wireless infrastructure.

The next generation technology, called 3G CDMA 1X technology, is an enhancement to the CDMA (code division multiple access) wireless format, demonstrating a peak transmission rate of 153 kilobits per second (kbps), which is 10 times faster than currently available.

This faster data rate will give mobile phone users the ability to use their handsets to access a range of high-speed, data-rich applications that will include Web browsing, streaming video, Web teleconferencing and other new, emerging data applications. This compares to current North American wireless data networking speeds ranging from 9.6 kilobits per second (kbps) to 14.4 kbps, adequate for text based messages and information on mobile phones. ``Lucent Technologies is extending its leadership role in developing the alliances necessary to deliver the mobile Internet to the mass market,'' said Holly Newman, product management director for Lucent's wireless networks business. ``This demonstration paves the way to ensuring the early availability of NeoPoint's handsets, enabling network operators to take full advantage of Lucent's next generation high-speed wireless services.''

``NeoPoint is proud to continue working with Lucent to offer corporate users and consumers the ability to enjoy the benefits of high-speed data services and applications enabled by 3G CDMA 1X technology,'' said Kye Cheung, director of product and program management at NeoPoint. ``We look forward to helping carriers rapidly launch high-speed mobile Web browsing and other advanced wireless data services using our state-of-the art smartphones.''

KDDI is a fragmented network with no "national" coverage yet. As the merger occurs(6 to 8 separate networks), they will finally be on equal footing with DoCoMo with a national offering and a compatible network.

Is this true? I thought DDI/IDO were already acting as a JV (and had been for over a year)....no roaming fees on each other's networks. If not, this would definitely explain some of NTT's dominance.
