Re: Verizon's Version of SBC's Project Pronto

Thread- Here's some details on how many NGDLC's Verizon appears to be deploying with their DSL upgrade plans. As I stated upstream, I'm of the belief Marconi will play a big part in the upgrades to field cabinet NGDLCs due to the huge footprint Marconi acquired via their Ohio based Realtec purchase of a few years ago.

Notice also the PR is out of Pittsburgh, PA. That's FORE Systems old headquarters. This sounds a lot like the Newbridge/Alcatel deal. In this case it's a combo provided by FORE/Realtec. Wish they was a way to invest in it.

When Marconi was putting the deals together a few years back, I thought it was a good idea. But at that time I couldn't find a way to invest in it. Now you can via symbol:MCONY, but IMVHO, the FORE/Realtec combo may already be priced in. Marconi was not like the Newbridge/Alcatel deal. NN/ALA took awhile for the street to catch on to it's value.

It's been awhile since I've done DD on MCONY. I might have made an error(dealing in British pounds was not fun), but from what I recall, MCONY was kind of expensive. -MikeM(From Florida)

Marconi Mesa Enclosures Selected By Verizon To House Next Generation Digital Loop Carriers

Marconi Solution Accomodates ADSL Electronics

08 August 2000-- Pittsburgh, PA - Marconi, a global provider of advanced communications solutions, announced today that it has been selected to supply Verizon with a more robust electronic enclosure to house the next generation digital loop carriers (NGDLCs) in the company's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic service area. Marconi is providing that help in the form of customized MESA® 4 and 6 modular electronic sealed architecture enclosures.

The MESA cabinets will house NGDLCs and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) electronics for Verizon's wireline network in the former Bell Atlantic service area. Verizon Communications is the national telecommunications company formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic and GTE.

Previously, Bell Atlantic used various cabinet manufacturers to provide their electronic closures. But the carrier has now standardized on several cabinets from two cabinet manufacturers for various line sizes and digital loop applications to be deployed within the former Bell Atlantic footprint. Over the course of its five-year contract, Marconi will provide between 1500 and 2000 MESA cabinets per year.

"The Marconi products were chosen because of their strong capabilities and robust design," said Patrick Welker, Marconi Communications' Executive Vice President of Outside Plant and Power. "We're pleased that Verizon found our solution to be an economical way to provide reliable protection for their ADSL network. The customized cabinets will feature an integrated swingout cross-connect, providing Verizon with easier access. The customization allows the enclosure to do more within the familiar MESA footprint."

The MESA products also have a thermal management system and control. The innovative heat exchanger cooling system keeps electronics from exceeding their various optimal temperatures, yet never introduces outside air and pollutants into the equipment chamber. In addition, the MESA enclosures are designed to withstand the most severe environmental conditions and are thoroughly tested against dust and water intrusion, exceeding even the most stringent industry standards.

This agreement represents about 85 percent of Verizon's total outside plant electronic enclosure usage in the former Bell Atlantic footprint and will account for millions of dollars in annual sales for Marconi Communications. Marconi began deploying the MESA enclosures this spring, with field trials taking place in April and May.
