<<<will repeat for the hard of hearing. No chance for Dell to move it's model & limited R&D to a proprietary, high
reliability/high performance standard.>>>
Your statement assumes that those should be Dells goals,
ie, high R+D and proprietary, but the converse is where Dell has successfully been.
IBM's had trouble converting their years of high R& D into profits. Compaq has profited little from the Tandem and DEC R&D efforts, and IMO suffers from proprietary designs
where one needs adapters to use a different CD player, for example.
Dell invents things to make their factories more efficient or the assembly of computers simpler, or integrates storage products, or makes the state of the art systems compatible and available at low cost.
Dell sells the product of IBM ( and other) research.
So...... no major R+D nor proprietary stuff as its commonly known elsewhere.
For high reliability and performance, Dell has no problem
Dell=38 1/2, toot toot

Re: "Win2K is a great product, but it's no Solaris 8."

The improvement I notice lately is the old Unix lover's no longer state MSFT's products are junk. They now are stating that while W2k is great SUNW is still superior.

I also noticed that the old "junk" @windows products out sold unix now what do you suppose "great' @windows products will do?

Reminder W2K Data Center (the real W2k) beta was just released two days ago. WindowsMe due September 14, Data Center (the real W2K) due September 28 among other release. The industry has always waited for MSFT products which always outsold SUNW's it's just a matter of time before the cycle begins DONT MISS IT by the light of the SUNW!
