If they announce GaN wafers maybe they'll get a CREE following <g>.

Mitel is another company that produce VCSELs amongst many other things:
mitel.com
I seem to recall seeing a few other companies announce VCSELs but their names escapes me at the moment.

Mitel's work in optical grating chips looks interesting.

Unfortunately, the materials used to make 850nm VCSELs don't translate well to longer wavelengths. As yet there are no commercial devices that operate at the telecom wavelengths of 1310 and 1550 nm.

AXT's VCSEL wafers have an aluminum gallium arsenide epi structure on a gallium arsenide substrate for 780nm and 850nm wavelength applications. AXT is already a leading supplier of indium phosphide substrates. They have made no mention of InP-based VCSEL wafers, but it would be a natural step for them to look at that for longer wavelengths.

Chief Executive Morris Young says that an epi-wafer containing 10,000 VCSEL devices is worth up to $10,000, compared with about $250 for the raw wafer.

However, Barron's predicts that VCSEL arrays will eventually become a commodity device, as standards are set for the arrays and new competitors (including AXT) enter the market. If they turn out to be correct, AXT is well-prepared, having competed successfully in the competitive substrates market for the the past decade.
