They are in the same category as TigerPaw's "right" to buy insurance at a reduced rate.

Clouding the issue? The only thing you have presented so far is a clouded issue. That is by design of the Gay political movement BTW. You combine various incompatible terms and present them as one issue. Inalienable rights and the laws related to Work or marriage, insurance costs which are based on demographics and risk factors; for example. First gays are very well situated in the world of work in comparison with the general population. It is true that a given employer may lean more towards hiring straights than Gays. But that same employer may lean more towards hiring tall than short or thin than fat, etc. As long as the general tendency is not putting Gays at a disadvantage these preferences don't represent a societal disadvantage or discrimination that would qualify gays for some sort of protected status. Lots of people who have long term relationships that are interdependent do not get recognized or have the "benefits" of being labeled married. I know of sisters who live as room mates through out their lives, for example.

You are bent on doing something politically advantages for the poor down trodden gays. Ask yourself what is wrong with this picture. As a group they are not poor or down trodden. Any political movement that you could propose should be aimed at leveling the playing field. The problems you have 1) convincing the rest of us that Gays as a group are suppressed in society because of the legal system, and 2) You have a sure fire way of labeling individuals who would qualify for any governmental assistance. Some people move among and between straight and gay identities. Clouded? yes to say the least.
