There are no easy (imo) answers unless you want to so simplify the problem that your solution is then meaningless. I grant you - you can come up with easy answers- they just don't correspond to any questions in the real world.

Are you trying to generalize some principle from that one example of the shoplifter? Sample of one?

How you get to fear of liberal guilt regarding the asking of hard questions, I really can't imagine. Might as well say conservative prejudices make people afraid to ask the hard questions.

Seems to me both liberals AND conservatives can't ask hard questions. They are both trapped in their ideological boxes and are quite, quite blind to reality. The spouting of rhetoric completely replaces the quest for any semblance of truth or answers that might conceivably mean something.
