By the way, to whom are you connected if you dial 911 on a G* phone?

I think I just read somewhere that there is an operator at the gateway who will patch you through to the right agency. I sure hope their lists are up-to-date. Or, maybe, each agency will have a G* phone number one day soon.

Ashley:

My typical mission profile takes me from southwest Florida to the Bahamas, Keys or Northern Florida. If you pull out a low enroute chart and examine the availability of RCO's, you will understand just how useless my handheld ICOM would be were we required to make a forced landing through most of the underlying geography. Despite the fact that I've wired the handheld through the plane's external antenna system, Naples tower finds it unreadable much past five miles out (@1000'-2000' MSL). Within this context, I would argue that the Globalstar phone is an absolute no-brainer.

Are you suggesting that one-pound of useable load is unmanageble? For my tender hide, and that of my family's, a phone that works anywhere is a far, far safer bet than a handheld radio that is most likely unreadable from the ground. Moreover, I discounted the aircraft-specific solutions because (a) they are more expensive and (b) they are airplane-centric. In contrast, upon arrival, we can use our Globalstar phone in cellular mode or satellite mode depending on the destination.

I personally think the Globalstar phone is a total no-brainer compared to the alternatives.

Best regards,

Gregg
