I agree there are people I do not WANT to support, but I know (logically) that frequently those are the people most needing help. It is easy to support the obvious and appealing cases. What is difficult is to help the ungrateful, the rude, the obscene, the criminal- and yet, those ARE the people it would be most advantageous for society to target.

I personally don't want to merely "support" anyone. I would like to spend MUCH more money and not only support but educate. I would like to see the government decriminalize drugs and offer drugs to the poor, to maintain people on habits, and offer rehab for those who are ready to get off. I would like to see child care easily available (not only for the parents- but to help train up the children, in ways their parents might not be able to, AND to give them better nutrition). You could argue that there are people working who "deserve" these services- and that these people who "won't" work don't deserve them- and I say again, deservedness isn't the issue. People who work, will teach their children to work. People who "choose" not to work will raise more children like them.

It's purely utilitarian. Even Jesus understood this concept.
