Hmmmm...I rather doubt it's as high as 95%. Maybe customers have been faced with either a self-install, or settle for a two-week wait. Americans are impatient people. We want the service yesterday.

Who knows for sure if it's 95% with an 80% success rate. I just posted the link, and it's from a Cablevision source. It could be 95% of the telemarketer's modem buys...I don't know. It certainly could be taken that way in the context of the report by Cablevision.

But even if it is only the modem buyers from the telemarketing initiative, having an 80% success rate is encouraging.

I think I agree that self installs are not some sort of panacea. It takes a properly installed two way cable, a cable ready PC, and someone that is not beyond calling tech support for assistance.

I know people that cannot install AOL without assistance. My own mother falls into that category. So there will be people that need their hand held through the entire process.

If the installer is replacing your drop from the pole with new wire, it's likely that it was old one way wire. It's very likely that if your CATV was installed more than 5 years ago that is the case. If you were installed more recently they used the two way wire. There is no pat answer across the board for all MSO's. Different companies have different policies. Then there is the case where the installer could have both kinds of wire in the truck, and the order was for TV only so he used up the old one way wire, especially in the transition period.

I do think that the MSO's will be able to increase the number of installs over time. Part of it will be the fact that new installations will always be two way wire, and down the road if phone or internet is desired the hook up will be easier and faster. I'm sure that AT&T is installing all two way wire now.
