Hi all; More boring DDR news: DDR DIMMs available from SMOD on line.

DDR DIMMs- Now available from Smart Modular Technologies 8/16/00
SMART Modular Technologies, Inchas launched an on-line ordering system for obtaining DDR DIMMs. SMART now offers this system, which provides quick, easy, and immediate DDR DIMM support to motherboard manufacturers, VARs, integrators, and channel customers who are ramping up their Athlon-based DDR platforms.
...
Current module availability includes 200MHz 128MB and 256MB unbuffered DIMMs along with 128MB and 256MB registered DDR DIMMs. Other densities such as 64MB and 512MB are available with minimal lead-times. The DDR DIMMs are configured as x64 and x72 using 16Mx8 and 32Mx4 devices.

SMART has been working closely with Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. to build an assortment of DDR DIMMs for AMD's system-level validation process. In addition, SMART is conducting device and DDR DIMM validation testing for AMD, ServerWorks, and Via Technologies.

P.S. While this is the first Simmtester reporting of this news, it isn't really that new, except for the on-line ordering feature. SMOD started supplying DDR to all those nonexistant DDR motherboard designers back around 6 months ago. And Micron already has DDR DIMMs available on line. But it is nice to have alternate sources coming up on line.

Hi Carl,

Sounds about right for this year's DDR sales to me if you are looking at the entire DRAM market, embedded and DIMMs. But I doubt seriously that anybody can say what 2001 will look like, let alone 2002.

I think that much will depend on the success or failure of the new high end processors. I have zip confidence in INTC anymore. From what I've seen it will be some time before the average desktop machine out grows low latency PC133. So I suspect that much of the early DDR is going into routers, switches, DSPs, etc.

I don't see DRDRAM making much headway so long as RMBS is suing the Fabs. They'll give it enough production to avoid a RMBS anti trust claim, but lord help RMBS if the DDR comparisons produce as expected.

What I really question is all the talk about segmentation in the memory market. I still think its just an illusion of this period of rich pricing for the Fabs. It may well be helpful to extend the current up cycle, but I don't see it lasting when supply overtakes demand across the board.

When that day arrives the Fabs, OEMS and everyone else will want the DRAM core designs that can be made in the greatest quantity with the highest margin. And I'm betting that will be SDRAM, DDR, and DDR2.
