Au contraire the servers are everything. J2EE is a standard bunch of APIs that provide services and functionality that enables an enterprise platform for distributed, component development. The application server is that platform that implements the APIs. I think you misunderstand what J2EE is. Its ALL about application servers.

You don't need new development tools- any Java development tool can be used - its just Java code! Of course app vendors that also sell dev't tools will put hooks in to make some things easier to do with their application servers.

I don't want to waste any more of the GG thread's bandwidth so we can continue in private if you have more questions but I would suggest you spend a little time at java.sun.com as there is very good information there on J2EE.
