Mark,

Lyle never fought Norton. Holmes did fight Norton back in 1978. Holmes took the title from Norton, but it ended in a decision. The only fight prior to the knock out by Tyson that I could recall that Larry Holmes was hurt badly was against Ernie Shavers. That was a real battle that Holmes gutted out and stopped Shavers late, but not until Shavers landed some real haymakers that nearly stopped Holmes. Mark, I'd bet that's the Holmes fight you recalled as Holmes-Lyle. To reiterate, Ron Lyle and Ernie Shavers were very similar in style, stature and punching power. Hope that helps.
