<<And I don't WANT him to go away. Especially so FAR away.
Depressed mom. >>

My first year was at a junior college so I could home on the weekends and work in the store. The second year I commuted and was home every evening.

The third year I joined the army and went way away. Bought my mother presents. Stayed by her till her dying day. I spread my wings and flew but I always remembered and visited often my parents. Ammo will just have more stories to relate, better conversation. Adventures from afar. The idea is to revel in the child you have created climbing to new heights.

Au Contraire, my good friend, I see this as a positive! With Ammo at SC, you will get out to hob nob with your left coast cronies frequently, and that would be a good thing!

FWIW, there is a Nieman Marcus in SF, 60 miles north of SC, a breathtakingly beautiful drive along Highway 1. Okay, okay, sometimes it's just breathtaking.

Shall I speak of the many wonderful wineries in the SC area?

Anyway, I cast my vote for UCSC for Ammo!

Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz. That's my vote. Edit ~
and to show I care, I'll come live in the pool house, or the room with the nice smelling heart with holes, and act like a teenager.

Can I get drums for Christmas to heighten the effect?

Sympathy. Being there, doing that.

We never want them to go away, let alone that far away. But they do.

And, truly, they should, hard as it is on us.

Have a friend whose son is at UCSC; loves it. Actually is in Europe this fall, just left, but thinks it's a great school. For what one vote is worth.

I think I've mostly gotten over the shock and grief of all three gone (girls went off last year). But they do come home for the summer, at least ours all do, so that's good. Fill up the emotional tank. Plus email is incredible. Girls write multiple times day, son only a few times a week, but at least they don't ONLY write when the need money, which seemed to be my only reason for writing home back, what, 30+ years ago.

Sympathy. But others of us have survived it, and you can too.

Maybe you need to start a new thread -- or retitle this thread -- "support group for parents whose children are leaving for college." Would get used a lot, I think.
