I hope I didn't make an error. I did do some rounding on some of the figures to make it easier to remember. If you take out the ISDN users, then Japan is WAY behind the US in broadband access. But if you include ISDN, then they are WAY ahead. Hard one to figure out? The US has something like 52% PC penetration rate, whereas Japan has 38%. The precise figure for Internet users(out of total population) in the USA escapes me, but I believe it's over 50%. So that makes it something around 135 million USA Internet users-- Could that be right? If so, by comparison, Japan only has 23 million or so. So it appears from first glance that Japan is considerably behind the US in terms of wired Internet use(Mobile wireless Internet use is a completely different animal). And if not for ISDN, Japan would be just barely started on the road to broadband. I'm optimistic that once Japan starts pulling out of their economic plights with confidence, we may see a surge in telecommunications infrastructure spending. -MikeM(From Florida) ****************************** -Approximate 130 million total population -Total of 20 to 27 million Internet users -10 to 13 million of those are wireless Internet users -Of the wireless subs, 7.5 million are i-mode(NTT DoCoMo) -15 million at home Internet users -12 million out of home Internet users -4.4 million overlap -Total of 22 million Internet users -18% of the total population are Internet users -38% of Japanese households have a PC -14 million own Internet phones -75,000 CM subs yr end 1999 -100,000 CM users yr end 2000 -200 DSL subs yr end 1999 -6,000 DSL subs yr end 2000 -By 2010 10 million CM users projected -By 2010 5 million DSL users projected -By 2010 45 million Internet users projected -Broadband Access(DSL or CM) costs between $50-$90/month -Jupiter Telecommunications is largest Japanese MSO -Jupiter has 25,000 CM subs -Jupiter charges $60/month for CM service -Titus is number two MSO in Japan -Titus has 100,000 TV subs -Titus has 20,000 CM subs -Titus has 20% penetration rate for CM access -Titus will now offer voice/video/data discount package ________________________"ISDN services are now provided by the east and west regional units of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.
