My wife went to UCSC for a couple of years. Funny how they'd be so hung up on grades when they have or had until last year a no-grade system. Written evaluations is what they use(d).

SC is kind of a throw back to the 60s if you didn't notice. Hope you kept your tie-die.

Yes, it was very hard. Now that I've gone through it, it's my turn to support others.

Congrats to Ammo! I assume you mean Genet's Ondine and not the ballet. I've not read or seen Ondine, but Genet is, yes, quite weird. Ondine was pre-war (WWII) when all of literary Europe was rather weird.

As to GPAs, our school, too, lumps in honors classes with the same weight as cooking or bonehead math. But if you point out in the essay that you took the advanced classes and that's why your GPA is a bit low, they'll take that into account. But yes, smelling the flowers in HS can have a negative effect on getting in the college of choice. OTOH, more and more studies are showing that a motivated student can get a good education virtually no matter where they go.

And of course extra curricular stuff still counts fairly heavily, so if his performance in Genet or other plays is good, get copies of the reviews or a tape of the performance and send them in with the application.

Good luck!
