IMO, much of the criticism leveled at Carter was based on his southerness. He was the first president from the Deep South since before the Civil War, and because of his accent and regional derivation he was roundly mocked by the northern establishment. I was born and reared in the Deep South, yet have a very flat accent and I can't tell you the number of times I've dropped my "roots" bomb on Northerners after letting them yack about the hicks and dumbass rednecks that live in the South. Very enlightening experiences for me. The prejudice is brutal, and no less offensive than racism in many respects.
