In my opinion, the president plays very little role in this type of situation. Damage control at best.... but is the president really in there on emergency fed meetings? Maybe, but do you think they have a clue as to what's the right decision to make? I don't.

You are right about relatively limited power of the president to do something positive. But you can't underestimate all the bad things that a president can do. For example, extend a market correction / recession into a Great Depression that only a World War could cure.

I doubt that most people who will vote for Bush because Gore has a Jewish running mate would have voted for Gore in the first place. The choice showed a lot of courage, and revealed a capacity for risk-taking that I thought Gore completely lacked.
