TMH, you have posed the INTC question of the time. But, as we implement more cable modem and DSL connections, with more full motion video, audio, and voice recognition, CPU power will be required because there is a whole bunch of processing required of the signals once they arrive at your PC.

What is really being dis-integrated from the PC is the storage of data and apps, but the CPU requirements are actually growing. Compared to Word or Excel, the CPU requirements of video, audio and voice are huge.

Also, the power of the servers, telecom equipment, I/O subsystems, etc., mean more and more CPUs with more and more power and specialized ASICS. InfiniBand, for example, lead by INTC, will require a whole new slew of INTC-built ASICS for I/O subsystems.

I would like to hear other opinions.

The theory is that then only threat to a gorilla, other than simply living out its CAP without coming up with something new, is another discontinuous innovation. Is there any need for this DI to come from another company

Both Christiansen and Porter point out that it is very difficult for an existing firm to successfully manage a discontinuous innovation. The best bet, according to Christiansen, being a separate spin off with its own management made up of managers committed to the innovation.
However a continuous innovation can often be successfully handled by the market leaders management.
The question might be is Intel faced with a truly discontinuous or a continuous innovation? I don't know?
