Randy, do you think the major auto mfg's will ever let 3rd party auto I-retailers sell NEW cars for less than their franchise dealers?
Used cars are different...eBay might well end up dominating the used car business.

Dealerships should let you test drive any of the vehicles the have for sale.

One approach people have used for buying new cars is to determine through test drive and
research the exact car and features you want. The fax what amounts to a request for quote
to all nearby dealers and let them bid on your desired car purchase.

I know you and I both agree that the successful retailer does not have to win on price. You were right to the point when you mentioned buying a book from Amazon and noth bothering to compare pricing. I agree with you completely for most items. I would not use the price comparison site for a book either. I use Barnes and Noble on-line only because I persoanally do not like Amazon but am not referring to their quality of service. It is personal due to money loss shorting the stock. Not a good reason I know.

I mentioned in an earlier post that car dealers make their most profit on the service department and the parts department. I get this information from a customer that owns the dealership from where I buy my cars. He tells me this outright and states the margins on service and parts are great. New cars are expensive to inventory and everyone wants a "deal."

I do not have a clue here so am looking for opinions. Would you say the majority of people choose a dealer based on price? Meaning they buy the model car from the dealer that has the lowest price or do you believe they look at service and selection too? I know I do not buy specifically on price. I would rather pay a few hundred more or even a thousand or so to buy from a dealer that will service my car quickly and properly. Also, one that shops at my store helps<VBG> I am wondering is automobile sales is more price driven then many other retail items. I hear people always bragging about what a great deal they received by negotiating prive forever. Granted, the same model car with the same addons are easy to compare. I just do not know.
