Carl, re: What Samsung is talking about is itself producing total RDRAM amounting to 300 million x 15% = 45 million chips.

I don't think that's correct. The quote states "out of a total 300 million devices shipped by the market"

Bob Eminian, vice president of marketing for Samsung Semiconductor, said he expected Direct RDRAM to comprise about 15% of Samsung's DRAM unit shipments next year -- out of a total 300 million devices shipped by the market.

My interpretation is Samsung believes 300 million RDRAM's will ship next year. Using your number of ~4B DRAM's, that's about 7.5%. (I think total DRAM's are lower, though).

At any rate, that's a far cry from the 40% of total DRAM for next year that Samsung forecast in June.

Samsung claimed that Direct RDRAMs will exceed 40% of its total DRAM shipments by the end of 2001.

I guess that means the P4 is dead as well because it uses RDRAM. However, the niche market for DDR in graphics cards is not dead. But then the PSII market is dead because it uses RDRAM.

By the way Carl, if I use your numbers of 4B chips per year and Samsung has 23% of the DRAM market as of last year (maybe more this year), I get .23 * 4,000,000,000 chips = 920 M dram chips est. So how come you come up with 300 M?
Then .15 * 920 M = 138 M rdram chips. But that is not enough to reanimate rdram as it has already died. I believe that because you told me so and you are the god of memory if I remember correctly.

By the way, Emmian did not say whether that DDR was going into graphics cards or PC main memory did he? How much of that DDR is going into graphics cards? I know now it 100% but what about next year?

So thank once again for the your attempt to educate us. Unfortunately, it appears that either you can't add or you can not make correct inferences from the facts or you don't really care about the facts.

If you ran a college for the benighted, I doubt if it would be accredited but who am I to be the judge?
