>>Content will drive subscribers to one provider vs. another provider

>This of course is very far from a given.

I agree that it's not a given. However, the vision is personalization across multiple platforms. I for one like being able to go up to a computer in a library, go to Excite, log in and be able to reach my bookmarks, content, etc.

Whether the vision will be executed is another question. However, I can see the logic and personally find it useful.

Excite has provided value. It's been a very low cost acquisition method of new @Home subscribers. Excite had a huge database of "profiles" that have been marketed when the @Home service became available in their areas.

Having viewed the @Home content for over 3 years, I also believe that Excite has provided a dramatic improvement to what was available previously.

Applications and content are what make the pipe useful. If there are 10 providers offering the pipe, why would you pick one over another. Obviously, price and speed will need to be comparable. After that, it will come down to which provider is the most useful. As I stated previously, that will be the provider that offers personalized content and applications to all devices.

@Home was first with the network. But others are coming. Eventually, the network will be a commoditiy. Then the Excite purchase will look much better.

It's hard to see it now. Plus, looking at the stock price, it's easy to be disillusioned. But if you look far enough into the future, it might not be that far fetched.

What I had hoped for from Excite was a blow-your-socks-off broadband environment that would draw people away from dialup. I've not seen the @home environment but it doesnt sound like they have accomplished that at all.

I'm kinda getting hooked on ClickVideo. But then Yahoo's Finance Vision really raises the bar.....but then both are painful or impossible without a BB connection.

Comcast is offering @Home for $12.95 for the first three months (if you buy the modem-$19.95 if you rent the modem) if you sign up before 8/31/00. I think they are going to really go after those 3 million subs and the last thing they want is a bunch of people ordering it for Christmas in December.

They are finally getting the idea that people will order @Home for multiple computer access and are running ads for home networking on the front page of Excite. They have a nice big section on home networking with a great 'how to' section to set up your service for multiple computers.

I am a slow learner, please bear with me.

Re Ahhaha: We have learned over time it is useless to try to fight with his attitude. Just accept it for it's entertainment value and search for the truths hidden beneath the muck.

Eric,

Good post. I have a couple of comments.

The world outside AOL understands very easily that content and distribution are completely different beasts.

I think that most of the informed people who I've talked to understand this and further, they believe that it is a mistake to try to bundle the two. That is what ATHM has tried to do and so far it hasn't worked.

I can think of no other situation in history where the content is closely connected to the method of delivering it in the minds of the public as it is with AOL.

Case in point would be IM. AOL breaks interoperability so that distribution of the content think called "Instant Messenger" is walled off. Again, same thing with ATHM and Excite.

I can't imagine anybody picking @home over Earthlink (for example) because of the Excite content. Can you?

Nope. I can imagine people choosing @Home over Earthlink and Excite over Yahoo.

What I had hoped for from Excite was a blow-your-socks-off broadband environment that would draw people away from dialup.

I suspect that someone will get that the fundamental differentiator will be the ability to create this "broadband delivery environment". Maybe the gods at ATHM know about this but realize that the ability to realize it is not yet here. Can't predictably control the last mile such that the BB environment will work...yet. One can hope that this will be solved and that the facility over creation idea will be what bails Excite out.
