KB, you know better. This is a mistake:

I can imagine people choosing @Home over Earthlink and Excite over Yahoo.

You are comparing apples and oranges where they only share the generic characteristic of "fruit", and you are comparing magazines and TV when they only share the characteristic of "pictures". There is no selective trade off in these components of comparison.

I have the Excite interface up and from IE's "favorites" I select Yahoo. They're complementary. There is no conceivable way I can choose Excite over Yahoo unless I'm trying to do a search. That's just a facility that both of these have. I rarely leave Yahoo to do a search on Excite, but I do use Excite a lot on independent searches by having another instance of IE up, and so I go through the Excite front end. Incidentally, I never use any of the so-called Excite "content" except I do look at their front page graphic. I would say my use is typical given the feedback I get. Maybe mine is more standard user than "techie".

As for choosing @Home over ELNK, that's the same as @Home over AOL. That would be possible if there were a field of comparable choice. It doesn't exist yet and it seems to be slowing in its inevitability. FTTH may obviate any such field. On the other hand many, probably the majority, seem quite happy with slow at $20/month. It is hard to believe, but that's what's happening.
