I have @Home and also kept my AOL for my wife's in-home business. The difference is incredible. I use the cable hook-up for high-speed access to AOL, and the AOL speed sucks big time.

The difference in speed between the two is amazing. Using the cable high speed connection with the Excite@Home service is lightning fast. I am not familiar with the innerworkings of AOL, but it seems they have not ramped up to high speed.

Another problem my wife and I have noticed is that we get far more crashes and internal errors when we are on AOL than on Excite@Home. Even with a high-speed hookup using AOL is just as frustrating as it is when accessed through a dial up modem.

Just imagine that @Home did not have Excite. Then AOL could sell content and use @home for internet access. It is late now since AOL bought time Warner and obtained the BB facilities in that transaction. However, consider that AOL still needs 100% BB access. AOL and T can still strike a deal to share the BB access for a fee. What prevents this from happenning? EXCITE, you go figure the management strategy of @home in buying Exite. AOL is the king of the internet for one reason: it is chat and Instant messages where cybering reigns supreme. It is the sex which has always sold media for all times since Adam and Eve.

If one product is complementary to another, it has the characteristic that the demand for it increases the demand for the other. Beyond all the competition talk there is something called utility. If, in aggregate, the total utility of the net expands, then ATHM, and many other companies, will surely find a way to exploit it for profit.

This imagined competitive struggle between AOL and ATHM, or narrowband and broadband, is a useless and misleading construct. It’s patzer talk.
