why aren't the shelves bare and why drastic price cuts?

18 months ago $200 was a really high price for a CPU. AMD just dropped their prices to $500, and you call that drastic? If they can get >$200 a CPU, their profits will go through the roof.

I think it's happening this week. Your interpretation is that it isn't. It's a subjective call, and it continues to be fascinating to watch the amazing technological progress from both these companies.
