T/A blah blah blah -

I looked back in the daily price history for GMST, and calculated that the "breakout" price is $78 7/8.

This is the price a pure breakout buyer would buy the stock, if it occurs on a day of volume 150% of average.

There you go, breakout number in advance, best to all GMST longs.

Regards, JB

Microsoft developing new TV chip

Thursday, August 24, 2000

BLOOMBERG NEWS

Microsoft Corp. and its WebTV unit are developing a chip to be introduced in the fall to power the
company's interactive television service, the company confirmed yesterday.

The Solo2 chip, being made by Toshiba Corp., can be used for other devices and services that use
the Internet, graphics and video, said Microsoft Senior Vice President Jon DeVaan. The new chip
will be introduced in television set-top boxes for Microsoft's new Ultimate TV service.

Microsoft, which makes the softare that runs with Intel Corp. chips in personal computers,
probably has spent more than $100 million developing the technology because it wasn't available
from existing chipmakers, said Richard Doherty, director of the Envisioneering Group, a
technology and market consulting firm, according to the San Jose Mercury News, which first
reported on the chip.

The market in chips for digital set-top boxes is currently dominated by Broadcom Corp. Microsoft's
new Ultimate TV service will offer features like digital video recording and interactive TV
programming.

bill gates was reported as saying, " we have bet the entire future of the company on this."

i would have to hear gates say that to believe it.

100 million is a tidy sum but not a big bet in this case since it represents less than 1/2 % of microsoft's cash horde of $24 billion.

i wss impressed the other day when i found out out that msft has 15 million set top box orders.

with all due respect to Microsoft & Bill Gates :
- the company has always been a software company.
- developing chips doesnt happen overnight, and that
area of the business has never been Microsoft's core
competency.
- 'Bill Gates reportedly said yadayadayada' dont make sense
if it is not an attributed quote, so it dont count in my books. ( with > $20B cash lying around, $100M is chump change).

cheers, kumar
