I've heard that about the newer AMD chips. They have caught up to INTC in the quality of the chips, but not in making them as profitably. The PC never was a very good game platform because Bill Gates never considered games to be an important use, and because a general purpose machine is seldom as good as a specialized one. If the upcoming Sony Paystation is half as good as the PR, I'll probably never buy another PC game ( I don't play them much but the technology is fascinating) As an investor I'm really not attracted to "interesting landscapes". I prefer those with a boring predestined outcome <<gg>>. In the long run the PC is going to have to dump the old x86 and the associated DOS core, but the resistance of the value chain will be stiff.Old dogs can learn new tricks but it ain't easy.
As far as excess power goes, as long as it is virtually free, people will welcome it. It's hard to make money on a tangible item most won't pay for..

Lucius I just spend about 10K on a Dell work station.I did a lot of digging and talked to people who are in the business for advice on all the configuration that I should pick. The one thing that was never argued was the microprocessor.Every one recommended intc.Although some of the guys I talked to are techno freaks and have pc with both amd and intc microprocessors, they still like the intc better.Don't ask me why or maybe it is a human thing, like go with what you know and has worked for you in the past. That can be a significant barrier itself.

I can relate to that a little bit as my purchasing habits are ingrained within certain product categories i.e. Sony tvs,Nokia Mobiles,Michelin Tyres,British Airways flights etc etc.
