Dan, I have to try and wipe out this concept when I see it. The stock market is not a zero sum game.

Companies earnings (in total) increase and usually the stock prices goes up with them. In fact, we know historically, that the market averages about a 10% return per year. Well above inflation.

If the market were zero sum long term earnings for the market as a whole would be zero by definition.

People who buy into this zero sum idea also then tend to build upon this false premise, usually with the idea that, "hey, all I have to do is be smarter than 50% +1 of the people out there and I'm sure to make money."

Take care,
mc
