This is getting a little too OT, Chic.

But IBM's better at basic physics research than just about anybody. They are, for example, pretty damn good at building disk drives. Should they refuse to sell them to EMC?

They're a lot less good at software.

Those patent portfolios and applied-science thingies like fabs that stamp out a bunch of identical patented objects (some of them even high-margin objects) are cash cows par excellence. They require a lot of investment but IBM's got the cash. Servers are screwdrivers, software, patches and handholding, all things that you can only make money at if you're really focussed and fanatical (like Sun is).

Intel cleaned up. Dell and CPQ walk a never-ending tightrope. You do the math.
