The press reported the taxed earnings, because AMD has to pay taxes, why is that so hard to understand? I've never seen the business press report "but if ABC company didn't have to pay, their earnings would have blown away estimates".

Actually, they are using their huge tax-loss carry-forwards to offset currently owed taxes so they aren't actually paying hard cash. This doesn't change the necessity of reporting of after-tax numbers. But, perhaps in the near future, the AMDroids won't have to worry about paying taxes at all. ;-)
