Regarding expensive spectrum costs, is it not a good thing for QCOM that the expensive spectrum money is being spent in markets that Q currently has 0% market share. In what market is Q involved in that has expensive spectrum? Japan gave it away, U.S. CDMA carriers already have large spectrum, Korea not going to open bid. Qualcomm is doing well in those markets, and the high cost associated with the spectrum in markets Qualcomm currently does not have access to should cause those carriers to much more carefully choose the right path for the future.

If the spectrum was free in Europe, would it not make it easier for the carriers to remain inefficient, and stay with their current systems and the expensive upgrades to those systems that await them on their path to 3G? Now they need to consider expensive spectrum and expensive upgrades. Expensive spectrum will benefit the most efficient.

Lets keep in mind that these are spectrum auctions, no one is forcing the carriers to bid too high. What system would you prefer, lottery? government allocation? free for all? The market is determining what the spectrum is worth, as it should. It is too bad that the proceeds end up in government coffers.

I believe the high prices paid are in anticipation of technology advances that will allow more and more data to be crammed in that space. Maybe these carriers are demonstrating superior VISION.
